Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER)
Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities (SENCER) is an initiative of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement and has been funded, in part, by the National Science Foundation. The program connects science and civic engagement by teaching through complex, capacious and unsolved public issues, such as natural catastrophes, water quality, HIV disease, the Human Genome Project, energy alternatives and nuclear disarmament.
SENCER is a strategic initiative to promote and sustain large-scale, institutionalized science education reform.
In 2003, Loyola University Chicago was selected to participate in the SENCER Summer Institute and to begin developing the pedogogy in science courses at the Loyola.
The coordinating team for SENCER at Loyola includes:
- John Pelissero, Vice Provost
- Jeffrey Doering, Chairperson, Department of Biology
- Asim Gangopadhyaya, Chairperson, Department of Physics
- JoBeth D'Agostino, Chairperson, Department of Natural Science
- Alan Gitelson, Professor, Political Science
- Diane Schiller, Professor, School of Education
- David Slavsky, Director, Center for Science and Math Education
