The Center for Comparative Education regularly organizes events and brings speakers to campus to present on topics related to comparative education and international Higher Education.
Spring 2012 events include:
Tuesday February 21, 2-3pm (1103 Lewis Towers WTC) -- Dr. Rebecca Clothey (Drexel University) will speak on "Challenges, Opportunities, and Best Practices for Internationally Administered Master's Programs"
Wednesday April 11, 2-3pm (1103 Lewis Towers WTC) -- Dr. Joan Gillespie (IES) will speak on "Partnering for Social Justice Abroad: Community Engagement in Santiago, Chile"
Dr. Gillespie's talk will discuss the ways that a program of international education meets institutional end educational goals in creating partnerships with community service organizations. The institutional goal envisions an education abroad program as a positive and productive member of the local community. The educational goal is to foster The educational goal is to foster significant intellectual and personal development in an intercultural context. Program models with significant community engagement draw on educational theories of experiential education, specifically community-based learning, and holistic student learning and development. The literature on creating international partnerships and working across cultures is equally important at the administrative level to meet program goals for all parties. This presentation discusses the literature of community engagement and creating international partnerships and apply it to a case study in Santiago, Chile where a program of international education with a curricular track in comparative health studies holds a longstanding partnership with a grassroots organization that provides community health education to an underserved population.
