Loyola Externship Program
WHAT IS IT?
The Loyola Externship Program is designed to provide students with practical experience under the supervision of a judge or lawyer and a supervising attorney from the School of Law. It is an opportunity to improve skills, incorporate the values of the profession, and to develop working habits in a work environment that is also an educational environment. Participating attorneys and judges are expected to utilize externs in ways which further the goals of the program.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Extern opportunities for academic credit are available to full-time and part-time law students. Full-time students are required to have completed all required first year courses, including Civil Procedure, Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Property, Torts and Legal Writing. Part-time students are required to have completed Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Torts and Legal Writing. Students may not receive credit for work performed as an extern if they are also being paid for that work.
WHAT ARE THE TIME REQUIREMENTS?
Students are expected to work at their extern site for a minimum of 110 hours for two credits and a minimum of 165 hours for 3 credits. Students must also register for, attend, and participate in the externship course in order to receive academic credit. Students may receive 2 or 3 hours of externship credit per semester and no more than 6 hours of total credit during their law school career.
WHAT ARE THE TIME REQUIREMENTS?
Students must also register for the extern course which is a required course designed to complement the work performed by the student in the field. Students self-select whether to enroll in this course for academic credit on a pass/fail basis or to enroll in the Externship-Intensive Field Placement which is graded.
