Announcing a new undergraduate lecture series cosponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, Applications of Mathematics Colloquia, wherein speakers will connect mathematics to a variety of disciplines within the college. For more information, contact the organizers (Rafal Goebel, Aaron Lauve).
The department welcomes the addition of new faculty for Fall 2011: Our new Assistant Professor in Mathematics is Dr. Marian Bocea Our new Assistant Professor in Statistics is Dr. Changwon Lim Our new Instructors are Dr. Loretta Bartolini and Mario Borha. Finally, Dr. Aaron Greicius joins us on a one-year appointment.
Congratulations to Dr. Tim O’Brien. Tim was just awarded a Jefferson Science Fellowship. He will be on leave from Loyola for 2011. Prof Buntinas will be Graduate Program Director for Statistics while Tim is away.
Recent accomplishments of our undergraduate and graduate students
John Versnel was awarded one of Loyola's Provost Fellowships for Undergraduate Research, Summer 2011, to work under Drs. Anthony Giaquinto and Aaron Lauve.
Zac Schaeffer and Kevin Green scored above the 50th percentile on the Putnam Exam this year.
Zac Schaeffer was selected for admission to the Carnegie Mellon Summer Undergraduate Mathematics Institute for 2011.
Kevin Greene was accepted to an REU at Harvey Mudd in CS.
Stephanie Miller was admitted to the PhD program in Physics at the University of Michigan.
Marty Hensen and Tan Fong Chan will work at Zurich Re over this summer as statistics interns.
Qingyang Zhang was accepted to the PhD program in the Statistics at Northwestern University.
Jieun Kim has been accepted to a PhD program in Applied Mathematics at SUNY.
