Leadership

"The real measure of Jesuit Universities lies in who our students become"

In carrying out Loyola's mission, Campus Ministry seeks to promote the development of the whole person with an emphasis on leadership for the church and society. Campus Ministry is looking for students who will come forward to lead and inspire fellow students this journey of faith doing justice.

According to Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, SJ, the 29th Superior General of the Society of Jesus, the heart of the Jesuit educational tradition is to form students to be “leaders-in-service.” That has been the goal of Jesuit education since the sixteenth century. It remains so today. We believe that this—a “leader in service”—is who you are and who you are becoming. We invite you to take another step forward along that road.

Please reflect upon the following list of opportunities to be “leaders-in-service.”  Feel free to approach any member of the ministry team if you need assistance in discerning how God might be calling you to live your faith more deeply.

Apply for a Loyola Companion position!

First-Year/ Sophomore/ Baumhart Companions

Loyola Companions are peer ministers whose mission is to build community in our residence halls through leadership in faith and service. If you are interested in reaching out to our first-year students, sophomore/transfer students or Baumhart (WTC) students living on campus by: welcoming new students, offering hospitality, leading weekly community service, leading a retreat, supporting Campus Ministry programs, reflecting/praying together, and having fun - then Loyola Companions is for you! Companions commit 4-5 hours per week to their ministry. Contact Jackie Marquez at 773.508.2204 for more information.

Search Retreat Companions

The Search retreat is a Christ-centered model for students to explore their faith and deepen their knowledge of self, God, and others. We are looking for dedicated leaders who have experienced a Search retreat at Loyola and are willing to build community and share their experience with others. If you are interested in being a retreat leader for one of the Search retreats contact Matt "Jake" Jacobson at 773.508.2202.

Alternative Break Immersion Companions

Student leaders will lead a group of students on a local, national or international immersion trip during spring or summer break. Companions are expected to attend training meetings and will be responsible for conducting interviews, researching information about the trip destination, building community amongst participants, facilitating pre-trip meetings and group reflection on the trip. Companions should have participated on a previous ABI trip. The companion shares the responsibility of driving a university van across the country or through nearby states, coordinate follow-up activities, and perform some logistical work. Those considering leading an ABI trip should understand the guiding principles of the ABI program and be committed to developing relationships of solidarity with an ABI host community. Contact Patrick Eccles at 773.508.2205 for more information.

Labre Companions

Leadership on the Labre team involves a deep commitment to issues of homelessness and the dignity of the human person. The mission of Labre is the formation of relationships with the homeless focusing on solidarity, rather than charity; placing emphasis on the relationships rather than on the act of providing food. A Labre companion should be interested in the ministry of hospitality and have significant experience participating in the weekly Labre service. Leaders are expected to serve 4-5 hours a week (including the direct service at the WTC and leader training meetings). While leaders are not required to live at the WTC, it is preferred. Contact Nicole Chmela at 312.915.6467 for more information.

Christian Life Communities (CLC) Small Group Companions

Christain Life Communites are small Ignatian faith groups that meet weekly to share experiences of faith. CLCs also serve together throughout the academic year. The CLC Companion is responsible for: building community by leading the weekly small group reflection, working with the Core Team to find opportunities for group service, and fostering leadership among group members. CLC Compaions can work in teams, or facilitate the group independently. For more information, contact Matt "Jake" Jacobson at 773.508.2202.

Responsibilities include: leading a weekly small group, meeting as a leadership team, facilitating the formation of the coordinators, outreach and publicity, providing spiritual resources to bolster faith on campus, collaborative programming with other student organizations, and coordinating service and other social activities for all CLC participants. Team members lead the annual canned food drive and delivery to Glenmary Farm during winter break. WTC Core Team

This position at the Water Tower Campus is for students who are looking for an opportunity to engage in the work of student development as well as develop professional skills. Successful candidates should be friendly, flexible, and interested in working independently at WTC. Each member of the student team will have responsibilities in special projects, marketing, Campus Ministry and communications. The application is available online. Applications are due by Friday, April 8; interviews will follow.

Peace and Justice Coordinator

Those considering this position should have extensive experience with the immersion program or similar social justice ministry, along with the desire to promote and organize Ministry’s peace and justice programs (ABI trips, and the Alternative Gift Fair). The peace and justice coordinator(s) would share 8-10 hours of work per week with the Alternative Break Immersion Coordinator and possibly lead an immersion. The position requires a commitment to faith-based social justice education and logistical and organizational work. The coordinator will plan and lead meetings, conduct interviews, and implement follow-up programs, including solidarity projects and awareness raising events. This position would give the coordinator continued leadership experience throughout the academic year and hands-on leadership training. Please express your interest in this position by the end of March. Contact Patrick Eccles at 773.508.2205 if you are interested in applying for this position.

Liturgy

Those involved work with the Directors of Sacramental Life and Music to facilitate liturgies at Loyola. The team does this by coordinating liturgical events and discussing the role of liturgy in the life of the Loyola community. Students assist by serving as leaders of individual liturgical ministries, such as lectors, greeters, Eucharistic ministers, cantors, instrumentalists, and choir. Please contact Fr. Patrick Dorsey, SJ at 773.508.8508 if interested in liturgy.

Pastoral Leadership Theology Minor
