Overhead Incentive

Pursuant to Tactic 3.5 of the 2009-15 Strategic Plan, this program creates incentives for Principal Investigators, chairs, Center directors, and deans to recover maximum facilities and administrative (“F&A” or overhead) costs on grants. Deans and Center directors receive “Overhead Incentive” fund allotments annually on a prorated basis commensurate with their unit’s share of F&A recovered in the previous fiscal year. Deans are expected to pass these allotments along, either directly or indirectly through department chairs, to highly-productive grant-funded faculty, to be used for research-related items not covered by their grants.

As soon as practicable after the closing of the books of the previous fiscal year, usually in August, the Associate Provost for Research will notify each Dean and Center director who is eligible for these allotments.

NOTE: We are not able at this time to transfer funds from the Overhead Incentive Fund to other accounting units. Thus access to the Overhead Incentive Fund will be managed centrally within ORS, through expense transfers and/or processing of allocable charges.

Broadening Participation in Research

Consistent with programs supported by NSF and NIH, this program provides support for units that encourage diversity in student participation in research so as to contribute to a broadly inclusive, well-trained science and engineering workforce. Awards will be in the form of undergraduate summer research fellowships of up to $3,000. Priority will be given to students who are or will be doing collaborative projects.

Requests for individual fellowships can be made at any time by deans or Center directors, in a memo to the Associate Provost for Research that details the following:

  • Name of prospective fellow and major
  • Description of how the fellowship will further the goals of the program
  • Timeframe for fellowship support
  • If applicable, a brief report on previous such fellowships awarded to the unit

Technology Commercialization

This program supports the development of technology arising out of research conducted by LUC faculty and staff. Funds available derive from the portion of net royalty income that is distributed to the Research Services office pursuant to the LUC patent policy (http://www.luc.edu/ors/patentpolicy.shtml) and the LUC copyright policy (http://www.luc.edu/ors/copyrightpolicy.shtml). At the discretion of the Associate Provost for Research, these monies will be used, among other things, to assist faculty in finding external funding for R&D that might have commercial possibilities, and to hire outside consultant(s) to market inventions and find licensees.

In addition, Invention Disclosure Awards of $500 are available for each qualifying Invention Disclosure Form submitted by an LUC Lakeside faculty or staff employee. For details: Click Here.
