Academic Advising   

BSW Advising

  • Incoming BSW freshman students will be assigned two advisors: 1) Undergraduate Advisor from the Office of Undergraduate Advising at the Sullivan Center and 2) Advisor from the School of Social Work. When students reach their 2nd semester of their sophomore year, they will not longer be receive advising through the Office of Undergraduate Advising.
  • Incoming BSW transfer students will be advised by advisors in the BSW program according to their year in the program.  

MSW Advising

  • Graduate students are assigned advisors according to their status: Advanced Standing, Full-time (2 years in program, Part-time (3 or 4 years in the program), 5-year (Loyola BSW students who have been accepted in the graduate program in their junior year), and Dual Degree students (students obtaining a MSW degree in addition to a degree from a pre-approved program.

Graduation

It is the student's responsibility to apply for graduation in the beginning of the fall semester in which the student will complete all of the requirements for the degree. The university has only one commencement each year. Students who complete degree requirements at the end of a summer session may participate in the Spring commencement ceremony; however, they will not officially be considered graduated until all degree requirements are met.

   

Awards

There are a number of honorary awards granted by the University and/or the School of Social Work. These include:

Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Honor Society
Criteria: Students are nominated by the faculty and invited to apply for membership in Alpha Sigma Nu. This represents outstanding scholarship and the student is required to be in the upper 15% of the class. In addition, service to the school and to the community are considered. The student is required to complete the application which includes a essay on their commitment to the ideals of Jesuit higher education and two letters of reverence.

President's Medallion
Criteria: Each year one student from each school in the University who represents outstanding leadership and ideals of the school and the university is awarded the President's Medallion. The recipient is nominated by the faculty and has demonstrated outstanding service to the school and the community within three years immediately prior to enrollment in the school. Upon nomination, candidates are requested to submit a resume and a brief statement of their accomplishment. The candidate must be strong academically with a GPA of 3.7 or better and have at least 27, but no more that 45 semester hours completed, including two semesters of field work accepted by the School of Social Work. Final selection for this award is made by the Award's Committee of the School of Social Work.

Dr. Joseph Lassner Award
This award is presented to an individual for outstanding services to students through the School of Social Work Graduate Student Association. The recipient is selected based on the votes of the members of the GSA executive committee. This award is named after the faculty member who was the founder and first liaison to GSA.

The Writing Awards in the School of Social Work
M.S.W. students are eligible to apply for the Loyola School of Social Work Writing Award. This $250.00 award with two honorable mention awards of $125.00, recognizes excellence in preparation of a paper. The competition is announced early in the spring semester. Papers are read and a winner selected by a committee of faculty and professionals in the social work community. The award is generally give at the graduation reception in the spring.

The Jimmy and Dorothy Fuerst Award is an annual writing award presented by a former faculty member of the School's Social Welfare Policy Sequence. The Award is based on a competitive review of papers submitted by students. The papers must discuss a complex policy issue.
