HONR 203  The U.S. Experience
Session: A
Campus: LSC
Days: Mondays & Wednesdays

Time: 6:00-9:00 PM

Credit Hours: 3
Instructor: Dr. John Frendreis

This course turns to the question, “Who are we in the United States of America?” We will approach this question using multiple texts and visual materials that address social, political, and cultural aspects of the U.S. experience. The readings, assignments, lectures, and class discussions will illustrate (and raise questions about) the main contours of American society and the American story, as well as consider the ways in which our self-image as a people both reflects and contradicts reality. This class builds on the Honors Seminar foundation course, which provides an intensive introduction to some of the fundamental works and ideas of Western culture.

HONR 216  Encountering Europe
Session: A
Campus: LSC
Days: Mondays - Thursdays
Time: 12:20-2:00 PM

Credit Hours: 3
Instructor: Dr. Christopher Whidden

This course focuses specifically on 20th century Europe.  We will examine the influence that key philosophical, political, and literary developments in the 20th century continue to have on individuals. What effect does the postmodern collapse of faith in human reason as a guide for human life have on human beings?  What consequences do total wars, totalitarianism, propaganda, labor camps, and biotechnology have on the human soul?  Are philosophy, statesmanship, and freedom still possible in light of the catastrophic events of the 20th century?  The course examines these questions through close textual analyses of works by Nietzsche, Huxley, Churchill, Orwell, Wiesel, and Solzhenitsyn. This class builds on the Honors Seminar foundation course, which provides an intensive introduction to some of the fundamental works and ideas of Western culture.
