Invocation delivered by Bren Murphy
Sunday, September 13, 2009
Good and gracious God, as we begin this school term, we pray for the grace to continue as a community to cultivate a culture of virtue:
A culture of purposefulness and tempered by flexibility
A culture of confidence tempered by humility
A culture of courage and tempered by prudence
Grant us the capacity to be both passionate and detached, idealistic and pragmatic, visionary and discerning, steadfast and forgiving
Cultivate in us a sense of justice that not only compels us to serve but also allows us to be but also to be served
May we never lose our quest for wisdom or our capacity for wonder
Holy Spirit, help us to remain mindful of the many gifts we have been given as faculty at this university…the gift of intellectual creation, the gift of useful and interesting work, the gift of inquiring and insightful students, the gift of colleagues good and true…in other words, the gift of our vocation and a place whose mission is to nurture it.
We thank you for all of these and ask your blessings on us as we begin this academic year.
In the words of The Book of Common Prayer "Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve with gladness and singleness of heart."
Amen
