Message from the Provost
As Provost and Chief Academic Officer of Loyola University Chicago, I have the privilege of overseeing the implementation of our academic and student development programs. The Office of the Provost coordinates the work of the Division of Academic Affairs and collaborates with the Student Development Division to fulfill the university’s academic mission. Our primary goal is to deliver a transformative education in the Jesuit tradition in which students learn and develop as persons through rigorous learning in our classrooms, time for reflection, opportunities for engaged and experiential learning, and a compassion to act on what one has learned. I believe that the Catholic Intellectual Heritage and our Jesuit heritage provide an environment in which values-based learning can develop graduates who have a commitment to lead, to serve, and to live extraordinary lives.
My office promotes and supports the academic environment for teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and service to our community and the world. Within Academic Affairs we have ten Colleges and Schools, several Institutes and Centers of Excellence, University Libraries, Global Initiatives, Enrollment Management, Academic Support Services, and University Core Curriculum, Honors, Environmental Sustainability, and Research programs.
Loyola University Chicago is classified as a Carnegie (High) Research University recognizing the quality of research and scholarship by our exceptional faculty. In fact, within this classification we are the largest Catholic research university in the United States. The Carnegie Foundation also designates Loyola University Chicago as a Community Engagement institution due to the high level of effective collaboration between the university and our larger communities.
From my vantage as chief academic officer, this is a most exciting time for Loyola University Chicago. Given our strong intellectual tradition, the breadth and quality of our academic programs, and the dedication of our superior faculty, we are poised to have a major impact on the quality of Jesuit Catholic higher education well into the 21st century.
