Meet the Staff

‌Derrick Gunter

Project Director

In this role, the Derrick Gunter provides leadership and administration for‌ the ACE program, advancing the University's strategic initiatives to support and retain low income students, first generation college students, and students with disabilities.‌‌‌  He is also responsible for ensuring that the program’s budgetary, operational, programming, and eligibility systems are compliant with the U.S. Department of Education’s regulations and guidelines for TRiO Student Support Services projects.

Derrick further oversees the implementation of ACE’s core services including tutoring, post-baccalaureate preparation, mentoring, advising, in addition to the program’s evaluation and assessment activities.

Derrick earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rowan University and completed his MEd in Higher Education Administration at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While Derrick Gunter is new to Loyola University Chicago, he is not new to TRiO. He is a proud alumnus of Rowan University's Educational Opportunity Program/Minority Achievement Program.

In addition, he has worked for Upward Bound, summer bridge programs, and is a contributing member of MAEOPP and ILAEOPP, regional and state TRiO professional associations. Inspired by his former involvement in TRiO programs, Derrick returned to the support network that he benefitted from, which affords him the opportunity to pursue his continued interest in access and equity in higher education.

Monica Cohen

ACE Advisor

Monica earned both a Bachelor's degree in Human Development and a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration from Boston College. Prior to starting at Loyola Chicago, Monica has four years of experience in Student Affairs, including work with students that identify as first generation and/or having high financial need, as well as time in both Residence Life and Career Services. Monica benefitted from a strong support network of peers, faculty, and staff during her undergraduate career, and is excited to be a part of ACE to "pay it forward" through providing the same level of guidance and support that allowed her to persist through college.  Additionally, as an East Coast transplant here in the midwest, she would love to hear any recommendations you have to add to her ever-growing Chicago Buccket List.

The Achieving College Excellence Advisor provides numerous services to ACE students, including academic support, financial literacy, career counseling, mentoring, and graduate school preparation. The Advisor is committed to creating strong involvement and community among ACE students.

Andrea Beaumont

Student Support Services Program Coordinator

Andrea serves the ACE program in a variety of roles, including data analysis and assessment, file review, and report preparation for the university and the US Department of Education in support of maintaining our TRiO grant.  Additionally, she coordinates the ACE website, and email account, along with organizing administrative functions, from tracking enrollment numbers and services provided to following up with ACE alumni.

Andrea comes from California, having earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a Computer Science Minor from Claremont McKenna College and her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology degree from Mount St. Mary’s College, both located in Southern California.  As an undergraduate, Andrea held part-time jobs in the computer lab and dining facility, worked as a Resident Assistant, served as an Orientation Leader, and was the senior student justice on her school’s Student Conduct Board.  After ten years working professionally in Higher Education Administration roles at wide-ranging universities across California, Andrea spent some time working in the private sector and living in Europe, prior to moving to the Chicago area.  Andrea is excited to work with the ACE scholars since she has extensive experience working with TRiO students and being a small part of the support network helping students overcome obstacles to achieve their dreams.

Plus, Andrea almost always has a fully stocked candy bowl in her office, and encourages students to stop by and say, “Hi,” as a wonderful distraction from the databases and spreadsheets.
