Paralegal Studies

The Paralegal Studies concentration is designed for IT degree students interested in law, business writing and research. This degree will train students in technical writing, legal principles, procedural rules and ethics. This degree is ideal for those seeking IT roles in the justice system and corporate communications.

Degree Requirements

The BA in Information Technology with Paralegal Studies concentration comprises 120 credit hours. Courses in Loyola's college degree completion programs are offered in 8-week evening/weekend sessions. Online courses as well as on-campus courses are available. 

I. Information Technology Major: 36 credit hours

  • COMP 170: Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming
  • COMP 251: Introduction to Database Systems
  • COMP 305: Database Administration
  • COMP 3XX: Data Processing, Analysis, and Visualization
  • COMP 3XX: Introduction to Web Application Development
  • COMP 317: Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues in Computing
  • CPST 250: Foundations of Organizations
  • CPST 310: Accounting Principles and Applications
  • ECON 201: Principles of Economics: Introduction to Microeconomics
  • STAT 103: Statistics

Requirements and Systems Analysis (choose one of the following):

  • COMP 320: Software Systems Analysis
  • INFS 347: Systems Analysis and Design
  • ISOM 393: Requirements Analysis & Communication

Project management (choose one of the following):

  • CPST 349: Project Management
  • COMP 3XX: IT Project Management

II. SCPS Common Curriculum: 9 credit hours

  • CPST 200: Introduction to Degree Completion
  • CPST 201: Professional Identity and Development
  • CPST 399: Capstone

III. Paralegal Studies Concentration

Students have the opportunity to earn a Certificate in Paralegal Studies as a part of degree completion. The following guidelines must be met before taking paralegal certificate courses:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 with a minimum of 12 Loyola hours completed
  • Within 44 hours of degree completion
  • A minimum of two completed courses total from the following: 
    - Any Literary Knowledge and Experience course
    - ENGL 310 Business and Professional Writing
  • At least three CPST-titled courses completed
  • An interview with the director of the Institute for Paralegal Studies

V. Electives

A total of 120 credits are required for the degree at Loyola University Chicago. Sources of the remaining credits can include courses offered in the SCPS 8-week session schedule or the 16-week semester schedule. Transfer credits (not already used in the major, concentration, or University Core), Prior Learning Assessment, CLEP, DSST, or ACE-evaluated credits (such as your military transcript) can all used to fulfill the remaining elective credit requirements that get you to 120 credits, subject to residency and other requirements.
