Dr. Karanja received her Masters Degree in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. She later received her Ph.D in Anthropology from the University of Cincinati in Ohio. She came to Loyola in 1988 as a part time professor. In 1992 she became a full time professor in the Anthroplogy Department in 1992. She is the director of Black World Studies Department. (formerly known as African American Studies) which is part of the Center for Interdisciplinary Programs.
She is an interpretive anthropologist, with interests in symbolism, language and culture. She has a particular interest in representation of women's culture in fiction. Her regional interest in the black diaspora has taken her through out Africa and the Caribbean.
