Biodiesel Labs and Lessons

What We Do

We want to make environmental education a part of every high school student's education. We use biodiesel as a working example of conservation, energy cycles, and sustainability. We open our Biodiesel Lab for field trips; offer in-class guest speaking and assist with biodiesel labs; and provide support for teachers and students via e-mail, videos, and equipment design/sales.

 Labs and Lessons

Faculty, staff, and students involved in the Biodiesel Program have developed a series of labs that help high school teachers introduce renewable energy topics into the existing curricula. Our labs have been designed to teach common chemical, physical, and environmental principles through the lens of biodiesel production and testing. These labs can be presented individually or as a series/section on biodiesel.

Our approach to creating these labs was to incorporate as many topic areas as possible and employ hands-on, student inquiry, and interdisciplinary learning techniques. We would like to build our bank of labs over time and welcome teachers to share their labs.

High School Teachers

We want to be a resource for you and your students. Beyond our on-line resources we can come speak to your class, help run biodiesel labs at your school, and invite you to bring your class to Loyola University Chicago for a tour of our Biodiesel Lab and other sustainability projects on campus run by the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy (CUERP).
