Biofuels Lab

The Biodiesel Class at Loyola

1 Credit Lab
Department Approval Required (ESP, BIOL, CHEM)

The Center for Urban Environmental Research and Policy (CUERP) has launched a laboratory class to explore the conversion of waste products on campus into usable energy. In this hands-on lab, students will learn about the growing global movement toward producing renewable energy, with a focus on the utilization of waste products. We will explore everything from chemistry involved to the global impacts of energy technologies on people and the environment. Through readings, discussions, and field trips students will investigate the role of biofuels in the broader energy landscape.

The Loyola Biodiesel Lab serves as the hands-on example of biofuels in action. Biodiesel made from waste vegetable oil, gathered from Loyola's dining halls, will serve as a case study for sustainable, renewable energy. Students will conduct scientific research experiments on waste utilization with the goal of expansion to campus scale projects.

“In reflection of my time spent at the Biodiesel Lab I have learned the complexity of sustainability and the interdisciplinary nature of the problem. It was a terrific experience for me, and I learned that a little effort towards the environment goes a long way for everyone.”
– Jamal Adas, Biofuels Lab Course Spring 2011
