RESEARCH INTERESTS

My primary research interest is stream ecology, with an emphasis on the effects of human activities, such as urbanization, forestry practices, and agriculture on stream ecosystem function. I have conducted research at numerous scales of stream ecology from nutrient dynamics to stream periphyton to community dynamics up through food webs to ecosystem function.

Major Research Projects:

Effects of large wood on stream ecosystem function: In collaboration with Jennifer Tank and Gary Lamberti (University of Notre Dame), I have been involved in a project examining the effects of experimental addition of large woody debris on ecosystem function in three streams of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are measuring the responses in nutrient cycling, ecosystem metabolism, organic matter retention and invertebrate secondary production.

Novel carbon in Midwestern agricultural streams: In collaboration with Jennifer Tank (Notre Dame), Todd Royer (Indiana University) and Matt Whiles (Southern Illinois University), I have been examining the effects of agricultural crop residue on food webs of agricultural streams in the mid-west.

Effects of Pharmaceuticals on Stream Ecosystem Function: In Loyola’s Aquatic facility, I have been examining the effects of pharmaceutical compounds found in rivers below wastewater treatment plants on stream ecosystem functions.

Linking whole-system organic matter cycling to quantitative food webs in the Colorado River: In collaboration with Bob Hall (University of Wyoming), Colden Baxter (Idaho State University) and Ted Kennedy (Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center, USGS), I have been examining the flow of energy in food webs of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

Effects of velocity and temperature on algal and invertebrate production: In collaboration with Ted Kennedy, (Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center, USGS), I am examining the role of fluctuating velocity and temperature associated with releases from Glen Canyon dam on algae and invertebrates.
