"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy" – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
My First Year Memory:
I remember the moment my grandparents pulled away from campus in their Chevy Suburban, leaving me outside my dorm as a first-year student, 140 miles away from home, surrounded by students who didn’t look like me and a community in which I was not familiar. Taking it all in, there was a sadness that I entertained, but only for a moment, because it was quickly followed by an empowering freedom and curiosity that, now as I look back, carried me throughout my four years of college.
