Dear Madonna della Strada Community Member,
My name is Steven Betancourt and I am the Assistant Director of Campus Ministry and Director of Liturgical Music for Loyola University Chicago and Madonna della Strada Chapel. I am so honored to share a new opportunity for the Madonna della Strada community.
This November marks the 75th anniversary of the Chapel’s dedication. To celebrate this important milestone, the University is embarking on a campaign to complete the final design of the chapel that Father James Mertz, S.J., a key visionary in the original construction, had envisioned. Madonna della Strada was constructed throughout the Great Depression, and successfully completed as a result of generous gifts from our community members. Funding for the final phase—the completion of the bell tower and bell installation—was never concluded due to the economic hardship of this time in history. Today, after months of careful research, Loyola has determined that the existing tower can accommodate a set of four cast bells and our community has the unique opportunity to be part of realizing Father Mertz’s vision.
It is a pleasure to share that funding for three out of the four bells is committed! We are now coming to you, in the spirit of generosity for the original plans for the Chapel, to ask you to consider making a financial commitment to fund the final bell, the James bell, in honor and memory of Father Mertz. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for this important anniversary project. At the close of the campaign, we will celebrate with a blessing for the bells before we install them in time for the Christmas season.
I look forward to hearing the bells call our community to worship in this sacred place. Thank you for celebrating mass at Madonna della Strada and thank you for considering a gift to help Father Mertz’s vision come to life.
