Spring Break Senior Backpacking Trip

2/28 - 3/9 - $450

Rest - Reflect - Backpack - Bike - Learn – Explore
If you're a Loyola senior and hope to culminate your time at Loyola on an adventurous note, then this alternative Spring Break is for you! Planned and facilitated by senior students for senior students, we will road trip to sunnier days at the Georgia, Florida border, to begin a trip of reflection, adventure, and good vibes on Cumberland Island.  Beauty and solitude abound on this historic island.  From our beachside Sea Camp to the fern-strewn jungle of the inner island, we will experience ecological wonders from dolphins to wild horses to all sorts of tree-dangling epiphytes along the trail. We will work through the challenges and pleasures of backcountry travel in solidarity with fellow seniors, cooking amazing meals from the food we carry on our backs and pitching tents amidst the salty sea breeze!
This is a terrific opportunity to reflect on senior year, prepare for upcoming adventures, relax on the beach during the dreary Chicago winter, learn outdoor skills, and take in some natural beauty. The trip cost of $450 includes van transportation both ways, lodging, group gear, meals in the field, a biking day excursion, sleeping bag, and headlamp. Road trip meals as well as personal gear (jackets, hats, etc.) are not included in the cost. No prior outdoors experience necessary!

After a road trip to Florida, we will explore the white sandy beaches of St. Josephs Peninsula State Park. At this time of year you can expect cool to warm days for exploration and cool nights for sleeping. Our itinerary is geared for first-time paddlers, but all experience levels will enjoy the beauty and solitude of this trip. This trip is an expedition of sorts and we will be carrying all of our gear in our kayaks —resulting in an excellent outdoor learning experience and challenge. Our home for the week will be a wilderness beach camp with nothing but sand between us and the water. We will do our best to make time each day to snorkel, day hike, paddle, cook amazing meals and of course relax and enjoy this amazing natural area. Our time in Florida will conclude with a service project to help care for the place we called home for a week.
