Career Planning

The Career Center can assist you in discussing career concerns. This might include questions about what to major in, what career field to pursue, what academic majors relate to particular careers and whether to consider graduate school.

Initially, you will meet with a Career Center counselor in a brief walk-in session. Together, you will clarify your career concerns and identify the Career Center resources that will best meet your needs.

Career and Self Assessment Workshop (C-SAW)

This two-session workshop is designed to help you make decisions about majors and careers. Self-assessment inventories are used to help you determine your interests, values, skills and environmental preferences. With the guidance of a Career Center counselor, you will connect the information you have gathered about yourself to possible majors or careers.  For more information about C-SAW workshops, click here.

Career and Life Planning Lab (CPSY 224)

This two-credit-hour course teaches you a process that can be applied to making career-related decisions throughout your life. As a participant in this class, you will: complete a battery of self-assessment inventories that clarify your interests, values, skills and personality traits; conduct an in-depth investigation of an occupation; develop a plan of action designed to integrate information gathered about the world of work with your self-assessment results; and learn skills necessary to conduct an effective job search.

Sections of this class are offered at both the Lake Shore and Water Tower Campuses. For more information, including course schedule information for the current semester, click here.

Career Resource Library

You can investigate a major, an occupation, an industry or organization by using the video, computer software and print resources of the Career Center's resource library located at our office in the Sullivan Center, Room 296 at the Lake Shore Campus. The Career Resource library is also the place where you can find part-time, summer, internship or full-time position listings.

Career Inventory Testing

The Career Center offers a variety of inventories, exercises and resources to assist you with your career decision-making concerns. The process of selecting a career choice involves learning about yourself and learning about occupational options. Interest, skill, values and personality assessments are available to assist with the self-exploration process. For more information about the tests, click here or come to a walk-in session.

Informational Interviewing

Informational interviewing is an invaluable career research technique.  It provides you with the opportunity to gain "insider information" about a career, an organization or an industry.  For more information about Informational interviewing, click here.
