Meet Our Staff Members

Catherine Carrigan has been with the Career Development Center as a career adviser since July 2007. She works with students and alumni at each stage of the career development process, from exploration to job search preparation. Catherine also teaches a section of the Career and Life Planning course and leads workshops on all manner of career-related topics. In another life, she worked as a lawyer at the Chicago firm of Goldberg Kohn, where she specialized in commercial litigation and employment law. Catherine holds a B.S. in psychology from Vanderbilt University, a J.D. from the University of Michigan, and a M.A. in counseling psychology from Northwestern University. She is prouder, however, of her recent stints as a Cook County juror and background dancer in a Kid Sister music video. |

Marty Gahbauer is the newest member of the Career Development Center team. In his capacity as Employer Relations Coordinator, he works to establish rapport with the corporate and not for profit community and encourage the recruitment of Loyola University students. He is also responsible for managing the eight university career fairs. In addition, he conducts workshops on career specific topics. Prior to the CDC, Marty spent over twenty years in the advertising and marketing industries with the majority of his career at Leo Burnett in Account Management. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time chasing after his twins. Marty holds a BS in Advertising from the University of Illinois/Champaign-Urbana. |

Cam Helkowski is the Associate Director of the Career Development Center. She has been involved in higher education for over 30 years and at Loyola University Chicago since 1991. Her roles here have included counselor, instructor, and administrator. Cam is the co-author of several articles and books about college students, including: Connect College to Career: A Student’s Guide to Work and Life Transitions with Paul Hettich and The College Student Counseling Treatment Planner with Chris Stout and Art Jongma. She is also a highly evaluated speaker who has presented at conferences and throughout the US and Canada. Her life outside of Loyola includes sharing as much time as possible with her very large family. |

Aly Miller, our administrative assistant, is an alumna of Loyola University Chicago's Classical Studies program. She takes care of all the scheduling needs for the advisors, and helps to keep the office fully supplied and running smoothly. She is also responsible for registering employers and posting jobs in RamblerLink, so she knows the system well. Aly is a good resource for answering basic questions you may have about the office and the resources available. Aly enjoys, and we quote, “movies, video games, and extra warm weather.” |

Darby Scism has served as the Director of the Career Development Center at Loyola University Chicago since July 2006. She has worked in higher education for 16 years holding positions in career services at Indiana University, Texas A&M University and The George Washington University prior to coming to Loyola. In addition to her administrative duties, Darby teaches one section of the Career and Life Planning course each semester, as well as presenting workshops on various topics and collaborating with other Loyola departments on seminars and projects. Darby earned a BA in Psychology at Miami University Ohio, an MS in Counseling at Indiana University and a PhD in Higher Education Administration at Texas A&M University. She loves to travel and volunteers on the Program Board at Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center working with sexually and physically abused children. |

Maureen Smith, our Career Information Coordinator, supplies technical systems support for the Career Development Center. She is database administrator for the RamblerLink system, web content manager for the Center's website, and collects and extracts data for reports and studies. Maureen also coordinates the On-Campus Recruiting programs, scheduling visits from employers to the campus. She received her B.A. in Political Science from Upper Iowa University and her M.S. in Computer Science from Loyola. She is a founding member of the Chicago Branch of Celtic Women International, coordinates monthly programs related to Celtic women and culture, as well as special events, and is editor of CWI's newsletter. She also is an avid reader, typically in the mystery and history genre, enjoys internet research, and loves puzzles. |
