Dr. Asim Gangopadhyaya named as next Associate Dean for Planning and Resources

The Dean’s Office of the College of Arts & Sciences is happy to announce that Dr. Asim Gangopadhyaya has been appointed as the new Associate Dean for Resources and Planning. Dr. Gangopadhyaya joined Loyola’s faculty in 1989 and is presently chair of the Department of Physics. Under his leadership, the Physics Department has significantly increased the number of undergraduate majors. The American Institute of Physics (AIP) now ranks Loyola as fifth nationally of those whose Physics Departments confers bachelor degrees.

In addition to his accomplishments as a chair, as a faculty member, Dr. Gangopadhyaya is currently an Engaged Learning Faculty Fellow at Loyola University (2012-2014) and was a recipient of the Edwin T. & Vivijeanne F. Sujack award for teaching excellence (2003).

Asim has been a member of Loyola Core Curriculum Development and implementation committees.  Outside Loyola, and in collaboration with the Center of Science and Math Education, he has worked directly with area high schools to develop faculty on physics-based program development.

Dr. Gangopadhyaya earned his PhD from City University of New York with a focus on theoretical particle physics. His specialized research interest centers on quantum physics, which is showcased in his most recent book Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics: An Introduction, co-authored with J.V. Mallow and C. Rasinariu (2010). His long list of published works includes, but not limited to, research findings and essays in the Physical Review Letters, Physical Review A & D, Journal of Physics; International Journal of Modern Physics; Physics Letters, and the American Journal of Physics.

This academic and administrative experience will help advance the work of the College of Arts & Sciences, and will allow us to maintain a focus on the needs of academic departments and interdisciplinary programs across the College.
