2007 Midwest CIES regional conference

Loyola University Chicago, Chicago, IL, November 2-3, 2007 "Comparative Research in URBAN SETTINGS."

Loyola University Chicago will host the Comparative and International Education Society's (CIES) Regional Conference at its Water Tower Campus located in downtown Chicago. The Center for Comparative Education (CCE) and the School of Education will sponsor the Midwest CIES Regional Conference.

The Center addresses the need in the Chicagoland area and beyond for an interdisciplinary academic unit that focuses scholarship on global problems of education. Over the past several decades educational policy makers wishing to discern the quality of American education have turned increasingly to assessing school performance in other countries as a means of establishing standards against which to measure performance in this country. The relationship of school performance to economic growth is an international issue about which the Center is vitally concerned. Loyola scholars in the field take a comparative perspective on such issues as the privatization of education, the education of immigrant children, the use of schools to change the cultural and national identity of children in marginalized communities, and the relationship between education and globalization.

The theme entitled, “Comparative Research in Urban Settings” will be highlighted by a keynote address by Professor Robert Lawson from Ohio State University.

Come join the faculty and student comparativists at Loyola University Chicago as we celebrate all that Chicago has to offer!
