Faculty Mentors

A cornerstone of the Center for Faculty Professional Development (CFPD) is the faculty mentor program. Faculty mentors are selected because of their strong academic careers and their generous and collegial leadership. Mentors work with colleagues from across the university to enrich academic career development in the areas of teaching, research, publication and leadership.

CFPD will continue the faculty mentor program this year, adding several new mentors to the group. The new mentors were strongly recommended for this position by their colleagues. Several of the original faculty mentors have moved into other university positions: Professor Michael Kaufman is currently serving as the Associate Dean of the School of Law, Dr. Nancy Tuchman currently serves as the Associate Provost for Research, and Dr. Jennifer Haworth has been appointed Vice President of Mission & Ministry.

Faculty mentors can be consulted directly by writing them e-mail, calling their campus office, or arranging a meeting on one of the Lakeside campuses. Maywood faculty are also welcome to call the faculty mentors. Assistance with a meeting or other consultation can be facilitated by CFPD staff. Please contact us for assistance. To meet the faculty mentors, visit the faculty mentor profiles. Each of the mentors describe in their own words their thoughts on mentoring.

The faculty mentor program is intended to augment the mentoring which normally occurs within departments and with the guidance given by chairs and deans. Faculty mentors assist faculty in career development activities and collaborate with the junior faculty program to assist new faculty who join the Loyola community. In the past year, faculty have sought consultations with faculty mentors to become more effective researchers, teachers and community members. Many have found it valuable to consult campus colleagues who can provide guidance and help address gaps. Mentoring is particularly helpful when it comes from peers who are not also responsible for providing department level evaluations or tenure decisions. Each of the mentors understands the challenges posed by striving for a successful academic career.
