GRADUATE INSTRUCTIONS - DAY OF CEREMONY
The School of Social Work Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. at the Gentile Arena on the Lake Shore Campus. Graduates should arrive at the Centennial Forum Student Union no later than 5:00 p.m. wearing their caps and gowns. Students should not be wearing their hoods.
Please proceed to the Rambler Room. In the rambler Room preparation area, graduates will be given a seat and name card. Keep this card with you at all times during the ceremony. It is essential for locating your assigned seat and you will also carry it on stage for the correct announcement of your name. Students are already seated when the ceremony begins.
Purses and other items should be given to family members to hold during the ceremony, since there is no area in which they can be stored, nor will you return to the same seat after crossing the stage. Other than your seating card, graduates should not be carrying anything in their hands. All students attire should be at least business casual. Graduates must be in their assigned seats in the Gentile Arena by 6:15 p.m. The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Students that arrive late risk the possibility of not being seated with their class or walking across the stage. Guests of the graduates should please visit the Guest Information section of the website.
Tickets are not required for admission to the School of Social Work’s ceremony. However, graduates participating in the ceremony need to adhere to the participation deadlines for confirmation as set by Yolanda Golden, Academic Advisor Coordinator for the School of Social Work. This information will be emailed to students.
ACADEMIC APPAREL
Undergrad and graduate candidates who plan to participate in graduation MUST wear academic apparel that is purchased through the University Bookstore. The SSW does not provide apparel to students. The tassel color for the SSW is “citron”; not “gold”.
PH.D. CANDIDATES
Ph.D. candidates have their official graduation with the Graduate School (Thursday, May 10, 2012 at noon in the Gentile Center) and can wear their hood into the Social Work ceremony. Graduating doctoral students who would like to participate in the School of Social Work’s commencement ceremony should notify Yolanda Golden via email with the following information: graduation term (i.e. Spring 2012), department chair, and contact number. Ph.D. students will walk in the processional with SSW Faculty, but will not go on stage. Instead, students will be seated in the first row on the right hand side of the aisle. An usher will be present to guide graduating doctoral students to their seats.
Doctoral students that would like to attend the School of Social Work graduation reception should include this information as well. Tickets will be made available to these students via The School of Social Work Office of Internships and Student Services. Tickets can be picked up at the door on the day of the event.
MASTERS’ CANDIDATES
Masters’ graduates should carry their hoods with them and wait to put them on until instructed to do so during the ceremony. MSW graduates should wear their tassels on the left, as they already have an undergraduate degree.
B.S.W. CANDIDATES
BSW candidates with Laudatory Status will be given cords as they sign in at the Centennial Forum Student Union. BSW students should wear their tassels on the right.
SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK GRADUATION RECEPTION
The graduation reception for the School of Social Work will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 5:30-8:00 p.m. in Kasbeer Hall, (15th floor 25 E. Pearson, WTC). This event is intended for graduating BSW, MSW, and Ph.D students. Each graduating student will receive two tickets for this reception (one for the student and one for a guest). Additional information on RSVP procedures and ticket pick-up times will be sent to students electronically via their Loyola email addresses. December 2011 graduates are invited to attend this event as well. Students will need to bring their picture ID and sign for their own tickets in-person.
