Debating Society Sponsors Film Screening
August, 2008--The Loyola University Debating Society will host a screening of "The Great Debaters" Staring Denzel Washington Friday September 26th at 7:00 p.m.. The film will be shown in Damen Hall 144 (Finnegan Auditorium). The event is free to all undergraduates and Alumni. A discussion of the film and how you can get involved in the Urban Debate League of Chicago will follow.
Alumni are invited to attend the College of Arts and Sciences reception in Piper Hall beginning at 5:30 p.m.. The reception is part of Loyola's Family Weekend.

Loyola University Varsity Debate Team Wins Hollatz-Larson Debates
February, 2008--Loyola University’s varsity debate team was victorious at Hollatz-Larson Debate Tournament held February 15th-16th at Wheaton College in Wheaton IL. Of the 22 teams entered, Loyola’s top two teams closed out the final round in the varsity division.
Senior Alison Rane and her partner Audrey Anderson advanced through octo-finals in one bracket to the finals to meet Senior William Baldwin and Sophomore Matthew Muir. Baldwin and Muir were the top seed at 7-1 in the preliminary rounds. Of the 44 speakers entered in the varsity division, Rane was named the first place individual speaker and Baldwin was awarded the individual honor of second place speaker of the event.
Other schools in attendance included University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind.; Wheaton College, Hillsdale, Hillsdale, Mich.; Grove City College, Grove City, Pa.; Cedarville University, Cedarville, Ohio; Malone College, Canton, Ohio, and McKendree University, Lebanon, Ill. These two Loyola teams will represent Loyola at the National Parliamentary Debate Associations championship tournament at the United States Air Force Academy at the end of March.

DEBATE UPDATES: Rambler 2007
December, 2007--The 2007 Rambler Debate Tournament was held December 1st and 2nd at the Lakeshore Campus. Teams from 10 different schools attended the Rambler this year. The event was also attended by Loyola students and alumni. The event was a huge success in large part due to our alumni who served as judges for the event.
Students from CMUN 230 (Argumentation and Advocacy) attended and reviewed the debates. One brave student from the
class, Greg Okal, decided to give debate a shot and won several debates! Greg has decided to join the team full time.
For the first time in more than a decade we allowed debaters from Loyola to be eligible to advance into the elimination rounds. The varsity team of William Baldwin and Matt Muir made it all the way to finals where they lost on a 2‑1 decision to the Carthage College team of John Connor and Dana Watt. Congratulations to Carthage and the winner’s of the novice division from Depauw University (Avery Archer and Christine Walker)!
Rambler Tournament Attracts Debaters from Around the Midwest
Team Wins at Royal Invitational
October 2007--Loyola's Debating Society took top honors at the Royal Invitational at Bethel University, Arden Hill, Minn. October 27th. All three Loyola teams entered in the tournament advanced to the elimination rounds. Junior Jesse Wahlen was named the top speaker at the event and the team of William Baldwin (senior) and Matt Muir (sophomore) went undefeated to win the tournament.
September 2007--The Loyola University Debating Society will host the British National Touring Team on November 15th at 4:30 p.m. in room 142 of the Life Science Building.
Two members of the Debating Society will engage the British team in a parliamentary style debate lasting approximately one hour. The debate is free and open to the public. A reception for alumni, debating society members, and faculty will follow.
Debating for the British National Touring Team will be Alex Just, a senior studying history and politics at Oxford University, Oxford, England; and Alistair Cormack, a recent honors graduate in history and politics from the University of Durham, Durham, England.
Below is a brief biography of the British team:
Alex Just, Edinburgh, Scotland, is a former president of the Oxford Union and a senior at the University of Oxford studying history and politics. Since his first speech, which was about sausages, Just has built on a strong base to become a grand finalist at the World Schools' Championships in Singapore and a grand finalist at the World Universities' Championships in Malaysia. He has coached debate in Australia, France, Qatar and the U.S. Most recently, Alex coached the Scottish national debating team who won the 2007 World Championships in South Korea. His interests include soccer, soul music and cooking.Alistair Cormack, London, graduated from the University of Durham with an honors degree in history and politics. He was president of the Durham Union Society and represented Durham at both the European and World Debating Championships. Cormack won several British intervarsity competitions and was ranked in the top ten European speakers of 2006 and is also a finalist at the English National Championships. He has convened the Durham IV and Durham Schools competitions. This is Cormack's second ESU tour; in 2006 he was part of the tour of Japan. Alistair is a skilled puppeteer and has a keen interest in international cinema.
