This year’s Saturday of Service was another successful event!  At the start of every academic year Loyola first-year students are welcomed to campus with a full week of engaging and fun activities that facilitate connection with their peers, campus, and community.  A tradition that many upper-class students remember as they approach commencement is their first service project during Welcome Week, called Saturday of Service.

The Center for Community Service and Action, a new area within the Division of Student Development, organized this year’s service project.  Loyola staff successfully recruited more than 240 freshmen on Saturday, Aug. 27 that were assigned various service projects in Rogers Park and Edgewater communities. 

Some service projects included:

• Painting the interior space of the Rogers Park Community Council
• Pulling weeds in the enclosed garden areas in front of George B. Swift Elementary School
• Unpacking and prepping books for the school year at Eugene Field Elementary School
• Pulling weeds along the CTA Wall and near Dominick’s parking lot at Glenlake Avenue
• Cleaning up streets and alleys within one-mile radius from Loyola’s campus

Unique to Saturday of Service is that the projects stay local with an attempt to serve a need of an organization or community group.  It also provides an access point for first-year students to connect with the appropriate people at Loyola who facilitate ongoing service opportunities.
