CPELL 2014 Conference
On February 1, 2014, Chicagoland Partners for English Language Learners (CPELL) hosted a conference on the Loyola University Chicago Lake Shore campus. As a federally funded grant program, CPELL works with seven partner districts in Chicago and the Chicagoland area. The CPELL team, members of the partner school district administration teams, and CPELL scholars and graduates form a Governing Board that meets twice yearly to discuss work that has been accomplished and to plan future work.
This conference was developed in response to need expressed at the Governing Board meetings as a way to bring the topic of parent engagement into a setting where all who are interested—inside the CPELL program and within the greater community—could come together to learn, discuss, and share ideas.
Thank you to all who attended the CPELL 2014 Conference. Even a significant snowstorm could not put a damper on the enthusiasm and energy that each of you brought that Saturday. Your positive feedback has confirmed that the event was a success. For all of you who braved the weather to participate in this day, we say thank you! You made the day great.

A panel discussion gave CPELL 2014 Conference attendees the opportunity to ask questions of local experts. Panel members included Fairview South School D72 Superintendent Dr. Cynthia Whittaker, Loyola University Chicago professors of education & CPELL program members Dr. Marla Israel and Dr. Elizabeth Vera, Wellesley College professor of education and keynote speaker, Dr. Soo Hong, and Aptakisic-Tripp D102 Assistant Superintendent of Educational Innovation, Dr. Robert Hudson.

Wellesley College professor of education and CPELL 2014 Conference keynote speaker, Dr. Soo Hong, (center) converses with conference attendees in between sessions. Dr. Hong’s book A Cord of Three Strands: A New Approach to Parent Engagement in Schools, offers a close study of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, a grassroots organization on the northwest side of Chicago, whose work on parent engagement has drawn national attention.
A networking session and lunch sponsored by the CPELL program brought attendees together after the presentations to continue their discussions and provided opportunities for sharing ideas and strategies.
