Description
The course begins with E-R and Extend E-R diagrams used to design databases. Then we discuss the concept of relational databases and specifically look at Oracle which will be used by the students during the course. Issues of physical storage and use of indexes as well as optimization of queries are discussed using illustrations from Oracle databases. After that we cover normalization of relational databases. The students learn SQL and PL/SQL with an emphasis on object-relational programming enhancements to Oracle. The course also covers transaction processing, concurrency and distributed systems. We end with a brief introduction to data warehousing and data mining. The students will work on a project during the semester to put into practice most of what they learn.
