Dijkstra Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Computer Science
Beginning in 2005, this award recognizes the top academic performance by a graduating computer science major. Selection is based on GPA in all major courses and election by department faculty. The award is named for Edger W. Dijkstra (1930-2002) the Dutch computer scientist whose forty-plus years of broad contributions span programming languages, operating systems, distributed processing, and algorithm design. In 1968, in his letter to the editor of Communications of the ACM, "Go To Statment Considered Harmful," he articulated the need for a new programming paradigm that became "structured programming."
