Dr. Rachel Shefner has been involved in science education efforts at Loyola University Chicago since 2002. She received her B.S. in genetics and development from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in immunology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
After several years as a research immunologist, she decided to turn her attention to science education. This
shift in focus was stimulated in part by the fact that her three children attend Chicago public schools. Dr. Shefner's activities at Loyola include development of endorsement programs for teachers, professional development
support of research-based curricula in middle and high school, and curriculum design. Her work at Loyola is
supported by a number of funding sources, including the Illinois State Board of Education, the Gates Foundation,
and the Chicago Community Trust. Dr. Shefner is an active member of the planning committee for the Chicago
Symposium for Excellence in Teaching Undergraduate Science and Mathematics.
