The Center for Science and Math Education at Loyola announces an exciting program offering new options for CPS High
School science teachers. Starting in the summer of 2006, Loyola began offering a series of courses designed to
prepare current high school teachers to earn their endorsement in physics.
We have recently received approval from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to enroll another five to ten CPS teachers into
this program. Teachers will take coursework in physics, earth and space science, chemisty and the mathematics needed for physics in
order to earn their endorsement to teach physics and become superb teachers of high school physics.
Over a period of three years, teachers will take a series of courses taught by full time science faculty at Loyola
University. These courses combine content and pedgagogy both to increase teachers' knowledge of the specific
scientific content areas as well model best teaching practices for high school physics. Because of generous funding from
the Illinois State Board of Education, CPS and Loyola, there is no charge to teachers to gather up to 32 credit hours of
graduate level courses from Loyola!
The program will begin with the Summer Science Institute. This will consist of course work plus enhancement activities focused on
helping teachers become teacher leaders in physics education. Course work will begin with Mathematical
Methods of Physics, and will continue with one course each semester
and one per summer session. The Summer Science Institute will also include enhancement seminars covering such important topics as
integrating technology in the classroom, action research in the classroom, and current topics in modern science.
Throughout the course of the academic year, teachers will participate in a series of action research workshops and seminars;
participants will receive a stipend of $30/hour for participation in these action research workshops.
Currently, there are 65 teachers in the 107 CPS High Schools with an endorsement or major in physics. Your
participation in this program will provide you with the skills and experience needed to make a significant impact in a
vital area of science education. We look forward to working with you in meeting this area of local and national need.

Future Courses (Tentative Schedule)
Courses offered during the school year meet one evening per week, starting at 4:30 pm to allow teachers
time to get to class. Classes meet for either three or four hours (depending on whether there is a lab component for
the course) for ten weeks. The schedule is determined to be consistent with the CPS calendar, so there are no classes
on CPS holidays nor on report card pick-up days.
