Venue Logistical Information – Drew University


Venue: The CSRI 2013 will be held at Drew University in Madison New Jersey USA. Drew University has an academic community of about 2,100 people with a College of Liberal Arts (CLA), a Graduate School, and a Theological School. Madison is a suburban town approximately 25 miles west of lower New York City (Manhattan). The host of the conference is Dr. Karen Pechilis of the CLA Comparative Religion Department.

Dates: Thursday June 27 late afternoon to Sunday June 30 noon

Style: Please note that the CSRI is a presentation and discussion-based workshop-style conference. The conference is composed of scholars who offer insightful comments on each other’s work in a supportive atmosphere; the emphasis is on constructive academic theorizing. It is expected that all participants will attend all papers during the entire conference.

Conference Fee:

  • Residential participants (those rooming on campus) - The conference fee is $425, which includes: overnight accommodation on campus on a double-occupancy basis (includes sheets and towels); all meals except Friday dinner; transportation for field trip to NYC; van ride to Newark Airport only from Drew at the conclusion of the conference only. For graduate students only, this conference fee is $385.  


  • There is an upcharge for those who desire a single room. Total conference fee with single room option is $475. For graduate students only, this conference fee is $435.


  • Commuter participants - The conference fee is $275, which includes: all meals except Friday dinner and Sunday box lunch; parking on campus; transportation for field trip to NYC. For graduate students only, this fee is $235. Note: Commuter participants must inform the host in advance in order to receive a conference parking pass. If you do not contact the host in advance then you will be responsible for paying the more expensive on-site fee of $35 at Public Safety.


  • The conference fee is a flat fee; there is no per-item or per-diem discounting


  • The conference fee does not include: Soap/toiletries/hairdryer/iron (pls. bring your own); transportation from any airport or bus/train station (etc.) to Drew at the beginning of the conference; dinner in NYC on Friday night (there are options for all price ranges); paper, pens, notebook etc.

Other Information

On-Campus Housing: Conference participants who pay the rate for housing will be housed in Drew University’s newest dorm, McLendon, first opened in 2010. The facility is LEEDS certified and it is air-conditioned. Housing is in suites: each features a bathroom, a common area and two or three double bedrooms—with their own in-room sinks. Bedding and towels are included. Reminder: Soap and other toiletries are not included. Hairdryers and irons are not included.

Transportation to/from Drew University: It is each conference participant’s responsibility to bear the costs and logistics of transportation to and from Drew University. The one exception is that a van will be provided to take conference participants from Drew to Newark Airport only at the conclusion of the conference – please specify to the conference host in advance if you will require this van ride to Newark Airport.

Timings: Arrival at Drew: Please plan to arrive at Drew University between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 27. Departure from Drew: The conference will be concluded by noon on Sunday, June 30.

Additional information on Flying:

For those who are flying, it is strongly recommended to fly into Newark International Airport (code EWR). This airport is about 30 minutes by road from Drew. The New York airports (JFK, LaGuardia) are at a great distance and it will be expensive for you to secure and pay for transportation to Drew from them.

It is recommended that you coordinate with friends who are coming to the conference in order to arrange to meet when you land at Newark Airport so that you can share a taxi ride to Drew at your own shared expense.

On the return to Newark Airport from Drew only, there will be a hired van available to transport conference participants (no anticipated additional expense to participants besides driver’s tip). One van will leave Drew at noon, and one van will leave Drew at 1:30 p.m. Budget 30 minutes for the journey to the airport. For domestic flights, budget 90 minutes for checking bag, security check, getting to gate. Please schedule return domestic flights from Newark no earlier than 2:00 p.m. on Sunday (remember that all participants are expected to attend all sessions of the conference). For international departures, please budget an additional hour (i.e., leave Drew for the airport 3 hours in advance of your flight; schedule return flight no earlier than 3:00 p.m.).

Taxi from Newark Airport to Drew - Taking a taxi is the easiest way to get from the airport to Drew University. On the baggage claim level there is a station for taxis. “Terry’s Taxi” offers a taxi service to Drew University from Newark (about $50 plus $7.50 if giving 15% tip and $1.00 for each piece of luggage). Call in advance for current rates. Please make prior arrangements with the company “Terry’s Taxi” (toll free number in the US 1-973-334-5100). If you can’t make prior arrangements there are usually plenty of other taxis at the airport, but the fare may be higher. Make sure you agree with the taxi driver on the fare (plus tolls – but note there are no tolls from Newark Airport to Drew), before you leave the airport. Please note that companies with which you make prior arrangements will accept credit cards; in contrast, most on-the-spot taxi drivers take only US dollars, not credit cards or travelers cheques.

AirTrain from Newark Airport to Drew – Complicated - If you don’t have much baggage, you can also take the AirTrain Newark Train from Newark Liberty Airport to Newark Penn Station (this is different from New York Penn Station, which is in Manhattan). Get down at Newark Penn Station and take the light rail across town to Newark Broad Street Station. Trains to Madison NJ leave only from Newark Broad Street Station. Each of these services require a paid ticket. For details, use New Jersey Transit’s Trip Planner service – enter Newark Airport Rail Station in the From field and Madison Station in the To field at  (Trip Planner is in upper left corner). JFK Airport to Drew - It is also possible to get to Drew from JFK airport by taxi. “Airport Express Taxi” offers services to Drew for approx. $105 plus $15.75 tip and $1.00 per bag. Call in advance for current rates. Please make prior arrangements. From US – 1-888-566-6665. Outside US – 1-973-701-7884. There is also an area for taxis in case you could not make prior arrangements. These fares could be as high as $150.00 plus a 15% tip and tolls ($16) or more. Make sure to arrange the price before you leave in the taxi. Most taxi drivers only take US dollars, not credit cards or traveler checks.

You can also get to Drew by public transit. Take the AirTrain at JFK Airport to the Howard Beach/JFK Subway stop for the A Train. Take the A train ($2.25) to Penn Station. For directions from Penn Station to the Madison train station see Public Transportation to Drew link above.

LaGuardia Airport to Drew - Taking a taxi is the easiest way to get to Drew University. The taxis can be found on the baggage claim level. “Airport Express Taxi” offers a taxi service to Drew University from La Guardia for about $95 plus a $14.25 tip and about $16 in tolls. Call in advance for current rates. Please make prior arrangements with the company (from US 1-888-566-6665 or outside US – 1-973-701-7884). If you didn’t make arrangements beforehand you can usually still get a taxi, but the fare could be as high as $130.00 plus a 15% tip. Make sure to arrange the price before you get in the taxi.

Transfer from JFK Airport or LaGuardia Airport to Newark Airport – It is an option to buy a ticket on a shuttle from the New York airports to the Newark New Jersey airport, see Estimated travel time from New York airports to Newark airport via shuttle is 1.5 – 2.5 hours.
