James stephen mastaler

Jim at Volcano Arenal in Costa RicaJim assists with operations and sustainability projects for CUERP.  He is a PhD student in ethics, focusing on the role of morality and worldviews in responding to the ecological and social justice implications of a changing climate. 

He has previously served as the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club's Global Warming Solutions Advocate and has worked for a small NGO in Bangladesh.  While completing his MA in social justice at LUC, his studies included field research in Kenya and an integrative paper on the effects of a changing climate on the global poor.

His undergraduate background is in the sciences, having completed his BS in Environmental Studies.  During that time, he studied aquatic biology in the Bahamas, ecology in South India, as well as geology and botany in Northern Michigan and experimental tropical agricultural in Florida through the AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies where he has received certifications both as a Field Naturalist and as an Environmental Analyst.
