Urban Studies: The Faculty

Seeking Solutions to Pressing Urban Issues in Partnership with Chicago Communities

The program in Urban Studies is a collaborative effort between the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and the endowed Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL). Urban Studies attracts some of the best scholar-teachers from the College who often hold community research fellowships with CURL. The director for Urban Studies is Dr. Marilyn Krogh, Department of Sociology.

Located on the tenth floor of Lewis Towers at the Water Tower Campus, CURL is centrally located in the city. This location helps CURL develop collaboration between the university and a broad range of community-based organizations in the Chicago metropolitan area. The philosophy guiding the faculty and graduate student mentors with whom you will work as a Urban Studies student stems from community need; it is the community agenda that drives the research. We believe communities are a valuable resource, rich with skills and knowledge, which can and should partner with the university to find solutions to our most vexing urban issues. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the program, Urban Studies faculty also come from the Graduate School of Social Work, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Business Administration.
