The ESL program administers both the Graduate English Assessment Exam for already admitted graduate students and the English Placement Test for incoming ESL Program students. The Test of English for Loyola Admission (TELA) is no longer available.
Students who are coming to Loyola for the Intensive English Summer Program or for Intensive English studies in Fall or Spring before enrolling in a Loyola degree program must take a placement test before registering.
Loyola students may sign up for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes on their own without any placement test. For the summer program or for those students taking full time ESL in fall and spring (because they either are current Loyola students or are planning to come to Loyola for a degree following their ESL classes), testing to determine skills level will be required before the start of classes.
Testing for 2008 ESL Students
All students enrolling in the Intensive English Program to strengthen their skills before entering a Loyola degree program must take an English placement examination before beginning classes. The Fall 2008 placement test will be held at the time listed below at Lake Shore Campus. F-1 visa students should check in beforehand at Sullivan Center, 6339 N. Sheridan Road, the Office for International Programs suite on the second floor:
- Wednesday, August 20, 9:00 a.m.
Anyone testing later than the dates and times listed above will incur a late registration fee, so make arrangements to be tested before the end of June.

Testing for Summer 2008 Program students
All summer ESL students must take an English placement examination before beginning classes. Regularly scheduled Summer 2008 placement tests will be held on the following dates and times at Lake Shore Campus, Sullivan Center, 6339 N. Sheridan Road. Check in at the Office for International Programs, Room 206:
- Friday, June 27, 9:00 a.m.
Anyone testing later than the dates and times listed above will incur a late registration fee, so make arrangements to be tested before the end of June.
