Low Advanced to High Advanced Levels

Summer in Chicago is a time when students can study in the Intensive English Summer program at Loyola and also enjoy the cultural, social, and recreational opportunities that the city affords.  Loyola Beach, for example, is only a five-minute walk from the Lake Shore Campus where Loyola's summer ESL program classes are held.

The ESL summer program offers intensive study of all language skills, with an emphasis on academic preparation. The summer program offers small classes, personalized attention and intensive curriculum.

All students are placed in morning classes according to level. Morning classes meet Monday through Friday; afternoon classes meet three afternoons a week and are restricted to full time students unless space permits others to be enrolled.

Students who come to the U.S. for the main purpose of studying must get an F-1 visa. International students with an F-1 visa must take the full 10 credit hours of class: Six credits in the morning and four in the afternoon. U.S. citizens, immigrants, and those whose visas permit them to study part-time may take from three to ten credit hours.

Class Schedule

The Schedule for 2009 will be posted in fall 2008.

To create a supportive class environment, we have instituted a series of Principles and Policies for Academic Excellence to be observed in all ESL classes.

Placement Testing

All summer ESL students must take an English placement examination before beginning classes. All placement tests are held at the Lake Shore Campus. Summer 2008 placement test dates will be announced in the spring.

To register for the exam, or to schedule an oral interview and writing assessment, call ESL at: 773.508.3880, or e-mail: esl@luc.edu. The placement decisions of ESL faculty are final.
