Admission Deadlines:

Fall admission: Ph.D. applications are only accepted for the Fall admission cycle with a deadline date of January 1 (Mandatory for assistantship applicants and encouraged for all M.A. and M.A. Public History applicants).

The History Department offers a limited number of assistantships to students enrolled in the doctoral program and the M.A. in Public History program. Assistantship is not available for the M.A. program in History.

May 1 is the deadline for Fall admission without financial aid for all M.A. and M.A. Public History applicants.

Spring admission: October 1 for all M.A. and M.A. Public History applicants.

Applying to the M.A. Program

  1. A B.A. degree and a B average. Normally, students should have twenty-four hours of undergraduate coursework in history. You must send official transcripts of all undergraduate work as well as any graduate work;
  2. GRE scores: General Test;
  3. A one to two page statement of your objectives in applying for the M.A.;
  4. Three letters of recommendation, preferably from referees familiar with work in the field of history;
  5. A sample of your historical writing, preferably a research paper written for a history course;
  6. A completed application (available from Graduate Enrollment Management), accompanied by a $40 application fee.

Applying for the Ph.D Program

  1. B.A.; graduate work (often an M.A.) at the B plus level. We will need official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work;
  2. Scores from the GRE: General Test;
  3. A one to two page statement of your objectives in applying for the Ph.D.;
  4. Three letters of recommendation, preferably from referees familiar with your work in history;
  5. A Master's Essay, Master's Thesis, or a research paper written for a history course;
  6. A completed application (available from the Graduate Enrollment Management), accompanied by a $40 application fee.

In addition to the offices noted above, you should ask for forms and information from the following:

To apply you will need:

  1. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work;
  2. A one to two page statement of your objectives in applying for the M.A. or Ph.D. (whichever applies in your case);
  3. Three letters of recommendation;
  4. A sample of your writing, preferably a research paper if you are applying for the M.A.; a thesis, Master's essay, or a research paper written for a history course if you are applying for the Ph.D.;
  5. Scores from TOEFL-Test of English as a Foreign Language- to be taken by all students whose native language is not English. A minimum score of 550 is required;
  6. A completed application (available from Graduate Enrollment Management), accompanied by a $40 application fee;
  7. A completed financial statement, available from the International Student Advisor.

    The TOEFL scores and the financial statement should be sent to the International Student Advisor. The research paper(s) and all other items should be sent to the Graduate Enrollment Management Office.
