Applied Music Lessons
Information and Applications
Loyola's Music Program offers the opportunity to take applied lessons with experienced instructors who have performed and taught in Chicago, across the United States, and many countries across the world. We currently offer applied lessons in guitar, voice, piano, jazz piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, bass, and flute.
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Music Division, is in the process of revising procedures and it is also moving towards a merit system whereby decisions regarding students' applied lessons will be based on students' performance. It is with this in mind that we have developed a new set of guidelines for applied instruction in instrumental music.
New Guidelines for Applied Music Instruction:
1. Instrumental Juries at the end of the Fall 2008 semester will be used to rank
all students taking private lessons in an instrument.
2. Distribution of private lessons for the following semester of Spring 2009 will be
decided based on that ranking.
3. All incoming students continue to audition as before.
4. Honors Recital counts as a jury.
5. Priority will be given to the top ranking students in each instrumental category.
6. There is now a limit of one private lesson per semester per student unless otherwise
approved by Music Director.
There is an application process in order to be enrolled for lessons. Click below on the area of
your interest to download the application. Once you have completed it, please e-mail the form
to music-info@luc.edu.
If you are a returning student, please fill out the Re-Enrollment form and sent it to music-info@luc.edu.
Upon approval you will be registered for the class number shown in parentheses:
guitar (MUSC 282), organ (MUSC 283,) piano (MUSC 284), voice (MUSC 285), violin/viola
(MUSC 286), flute (MUSC 287), cello/bass (MUSC 288), trumpet (MUSC 398) and saxophone
(MUSC 398). students receive individual instruction, meeting 30 minutes per week one-on-one
with the instructor and studio classes as determined by their instructor. Students enrolled in applied music are required to perform at the end of semester jury for evaluation. Individual lessons further refine students' musicianship skills, as well as focus on repertoire development and well-rounded performance ability.
Students with elementary skills should enroll in Class Piano for Beginners (MUSC 102), Class Guitar for Beginners (MUSC 103), or Class Voice for Beginners (MUSC 142). These classes build basic musicianship skills in the specified instrument area, developing students' music theory skills and understanding of how the instrument functions.
