Dr. Susan Applebaum holds a Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama from Northwestern University. She currently teaches contemporary Dramatic Literature, a writing intensive course for upperclassmen, and Dramatic Structure and Theatrical Process, the introductory class in play analysis for the theatre major. During her years at Loyola, Dr. Applebaum has taught classes in dramatic literature (from ancient Grecian works to the modern theatre), theatre history, improvisation, acting for majors and non-majors, secondary school methods in theatre education, children’s theatre, and Introduction to the Theatrical Experience for the university core curriculum. In the Spring of 2008, Dr. Applebaum developed a new course, a special topics seminar in solo performance where students developed one-person presentations based on real-life figures and non-fiction texts.

Dr. Applebaum is also on the faculty of the Piven Theatre Workshop in Evanston. During her 14-year tenure at the Piven Theatre Workshop during the seventies and eighties, she directed both the Young People's Company and the Junior Company and taught classes in improvisation and story theatre for all ages and for teachers. In 2007, Dr. Applebaum taught a class in transformation and games with co-founder Joyce Piven and Artistic Director Jen Green of the Piven Theatre Workshop. At present, Dr. Applebaum is nearing completion of a book on the actor-training method taught at the Piven Theatre Workshop written collaboratively with Joyce Piven.
