Black Men's Initiative

Who We Are

The Black Men’s Initiative (BMI) is a retention effort spearheaded by the Department of Student Diversity & Multicultural Affairs in collaboration with other offices throughout the university community. The goal of the initiative is to increase the retention and matriculation of Black men at Loyola University Chicago. While Black males are one of the smallest underrepresented groups that are entering college, studies show that they are also the most at risk. This initiative is designed to improve the academic and personal success of Black and other minority men in college and specifically at Loyola. We are hoping to assist them in developing an understanding of their responsibilities as college students and as contributors to the broader society. We seek to build a strong community of dedicated individuals and to establish a supportive network for the group and its participants.
The Initiative is spearheaded by a Coordinator in the Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. There are also other professional staff members of the university that assists in the implementation and facilitation of the initiative. We truly believe that it takes a community of dedicated and concern individuals to help our students succeed. This team approach allows us to share the challenges and the successes of our participants.
