In August 2014, I begin my 35th year as a faculty member in the graduate programs in Higher Education and International Higher Education at Loyola. I arrived in 1980 following full-time student affairs work at the University of Evansville (IN), Illinois Wesleyan University, and Illinois Institute of Technology. My student affairs administrative experience encompassed serving in diverse units—often overlapping at times: residence life, campus activities, financial aid, and dean of students.
After formative years growing up in small, rural communities in northern Indiana and central Illinois, I entered college as a first generation college student and majored in business and mathematics leading to teacher certification at Illinois State University. Immediately following graduation from ISU, I was drafted into military service and served in an infantry combat unit in Viet Nam. I then returned to college earning a master’s degree from Indiana University (Bloomington) in College Student Personnel Administration and a few years later a Ph.D. from Florida State University in Higher Education.
My teaching at Loyola has focused on graduate courses related to the student affairs profession, enrollment management, history of higher education, and law of higher education. Additionally, for the past 9 summers I have offered a short-term graduate seminar in Rome, Italy examining factors that influence intercultural learning among U.S. students who study abroad. My most recent research, in collaboration with a graduate student research team, focuses on ways U.S. students who study abroad engage with and understand gender. Previously, my research focused on the socialization process experienced by student affairs professionals new to the field and issues related to student and institution “fit” in higher education. My work has also included directing to completion the doctoral research of over 85 Ph.D. students.
Over the last four years, my university service has taken on an exciting international perspective by designing and leading professional development programs both in the U.S. and in Vietnam for senior level university administrators and faculty from Vietnamese universities around mission, curriculum design and assessment, and leadership.
During my career at Loyola, I have served in academic leadership roles including Interim Dean of the School of Education in 1996-1997 and again in Winter/Spring 2013; several years as academic department chair; as Co-Program Chair for a new graduate program in International Higher Education; and many years as Higher Education Graduate Program Director.
I have been active in professional associations at the state, regional and national level, especially with the Illinois College Personnel Association (where I served as President) and ACPA—College Student Educators International, where I also served as President. I have also served as Trustee for ACPA’s Educational Leadership Foundation. On a personal note, I have been honored by ACPA, Indiana University, and by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) for my professional contributions. The American College Personnel Association has presented me with the Diamond Honoree Award. Indiana University’s Graduate Program in Higher Education and Student Affairs presented me with its Elizabeth A. Greenleaf Distinguished Alumnus Award (now deceased, Professor Greenleaf was my faculty advisor at IU). NASPA presented me with two of its national awards: The Melvene D. Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award (1980) and the Robert H. Shaffer Award for Academic Excellence as a Graduate Faculty Member (2003). Professor Hardee (now deceased) was my research director and faulty advisor at FSU and Professor Shaffer was a faculty member at IU during my enrollment there. I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to learn from these leaders in the field who together have shaped the professional educator I am today.
