Ed.D. in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies
Degree Requirements
Length of the Program: Students in the Ed.D. program are expected to complete 72 semester hours. Thirty of those hours may be transferred from previous graduate study if they are approved by the student's advisor. Students typically take two or three courses each semester and two courses in the summer. Completion time for the dissertation depends on the topic selected and the diligence of the student. Time for degree completion, including the dissertation, is seven years. (See SOE Policy: Time Limit for Degree Completion)
Curriculum Plan: Completion of the Ed.D. degree program requires 72 semester hours, candidacy examinations, a dissertation and a final oral defense of the dissertation.
Foundations Block (15 semester hours)
One course in each foundation area (comparative education, history of education, or philosophy of education) plus ELPS 405, Foundations of Educational Policy and Practice.
Policy Block (9 semester hours)

Research Block (9 semester hours)
- RMTD 401 Documentary Research
- RMTD 420 Educational Research I: Building a Body of Evidence Using Qualitative Methods
- RMTD 421 Education Research II: Building a Body of Evidence Using Quantitative Methods
Collaterals (12 semester hours)
Students must successfully complete coursework in at least two collateral areas (a minimum of two courses in each area) such as the following: curriculum, reading, educational psychology, special education, classroom assessment, instructional technology, administration and supervision, and any specialty within the foundations block.
Electives (27 semester hours)
Students may choose a maximum of nine elective courses with the consent of an academic advisor.
