M.Ed. in Elementary Education (Certification K-9)
M.Ed. in Secondary Education (Certification 6-12)

The M.Ed. in Elementary Education is designed for both recently matriculated graduates and experienced individuals from diverse professions who are looking to make a difference in the lives of children. Graduates of the program will receive a Type 03 Elementary Certificate for grades K-9. An additional endorsement on the certificate is required to teach in grades 5-9. The program of study qualifies individuals for a middle-grade endorsement upon completion of an approved area. Several university projects and community collaborations further the opportunities for individuals to be involved in a variety of educational experiences.

The M.Ed. in Secondary Education is designed for both recently matriculated graduates and career changers.  The program aims at preparing individuals for work in schools serving predominantly low income students in urban communities.  This program builds on individuals’ content knowledge, while deepening and broadening their understanding of teaching and learning in urban contexts. The program strives to prepare individuals to be effective educators in urban schools and improve the quality of education offered to young people in the Chicago metropolitan area. Several university projects and community collaborations further the opportunities for individuals to be involved in a variety of educational experiences.

Subjects: Loyola offers Type 09 certification in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry*, English, French, History, Italian, Latin, Math, Physics, Political Science*, Psychology*, Spanish and Theatre*. Individuals are required to have a minimum of 32 hours in their field of study prior to admission. Graduates of the program will receive a master's degree and Type 09 Secondary Certificate for grade 6-1w with an endorsement in a subject area.

* Political Science, Psychology and Theatre require a second teaching field.

Both degree programs are NCATE- and ISBE-approved.
