B.S.Ed. in Special Education with K-12 Teacher Certification

The B.S.Ed. in Special Education prepares full-time undergraduate teacher-education candidates seeking a bachelor's degree in education and certification as an LBSI (K-12) teacher. A secondary outcome is for these candidates to be certified as elementary teachers. The program trains candidates to work with students with special needs, ages 3-21, across the curriculum and in inclusive classroom settings.

The need for special education teachers is critical. The City of Chicago has more than 300 unfilled positions for the 2004 school year. According to the 2000 study by Recruting New Teachers, nearly 98% of the largest urban school districts in the 50 states noted an immediate need for special education teachers.

Degree Requirements

In addition to completing the requirements for the elementary education major (except for 2 courses: Math for Elementary Teachers II and Literacy Instruction in the Content Areas), special education majors complete specialized special education courses. Using a "block" model of combining course theory with practical application, the special education courses are paired with clinical experiences. Majors complete student teaching in both an elementary and a secondary classroom.

The elementary education requirement consists of 36 semester hours, and the special education major is 39 semester hours.
