We invite you to apply to the Graduate School of Education and join a community of working professionals and full-time students who have chosen to advance their careers by pursuing a graduate degree.

General Instructions

To apply for admission to the graduate programs in the School of Education, the following documents are required from domestic applicants:
  • A completed admission application
  • A $50 non-refundable application fee (fee waived for online application)
  • One set of official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, showing a GPA of at least 3.0*
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A statement of purpose. Please write a narrative of one to three pages that describes your:
    1. Academic and research interests, as well as professional goals
    2. Life experiences that have influenced your view of social justice
* Applicants whose undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 are encouraged to apply. Each program area gives meaningful consideration to the applicant's graduate GPA, GRE scores, recommendations, professional experience and reasons for pursuing a graduate program, as well as to the diversity of the student body.

In addition to these general requirements, applicants to the master's program in reading also need:
  • A current resume that highlights work experience relevant to your professional goals and which indicates at least two years of teaching experience
  • A copy of the Illinois teaching certificate
