B.S.Ed. in Special Education

Overview

The B.S.Ed. in Special Education prepares full-time undergraduate teacher-education candidates seeking a bachelor's degree in education and certification as an LBSI (K-12) teacher. A secondary outcome is for these candidates to be certified as elementary teachers. The program trains candidates to work with students with special needs, ages 3-21, across the curriculum and in inclusive classroom settings.

The need for special education teachers is critical. The City of Chicago has more than 300 unfilled positions for the 2004 school year. According to the 2000 study by Recruiting New Teachers, nearly 98% of the largest urban school districts in the 50 states noted an immediate need for special education teachers.
