Target New Transitions
Target New Transitions (TNT) is an on-site high school freshmen intervention that reduces Chicago’s escalating drop out statistics while simultaneously providing meaningful community-based employment for highly qualified college students. TNT pairs bright college students, who are professionally trained as academic coaches, with high school freshmen who come voluntarily looking for homework help for 3 hours on 22 Saturday mornings throughout the academic year.
Post-Secondary Planning Project
The Post-Secondary Planning (PSP) is a 20-week on-site outreach initiative staffed by a team of Academic Coaches from DePaul, Loyola and Northwestern University. Coaches help seniors in 4 GEAR UP high schools with “after graduation” plans and preparations on Saturday mornings for 3 hours. PSP also helps students review math basics necessary for life after high school; do post-secondary plans based on students’ skills; complete applications; do personal statements and essays and make productive post-secondary plans.
Algebra Boot Camp (ABC)
ABC is an 8-week algebra readiness curriculum that reinforces basic math concepts so participating students will begin their high school careers with increased math confidence. A team of 18 Academic Coaches delivered a sequenced combination of direct instruction, productive computation practice and critical thinking activities and games that kept students engaged for 3 hours on Saturday mornings at 2 GEAR UP high schools.
Pump Up the Prep
Pump Up the Prep was a 13 week standardized test prep project staffed by Academic Coaches from Loyola, DePaul and University of Chicago. Coaches helped juniors in 4 GEAR UP high schools with test taking strategies, motivation and practice tests for 3 hours on Saturday mornings. In addition to test specific skills, Academic Coaches also provided focused support in the areas of reading comprehension, graph interpretation and solving multi-step math problems.
Chicago Scholarship Challenge
The Chicago Scholarship Challenge (CSC) was a tournament competition that awarded cash scholarship prizes to successful competitors. Teams of Academic Coaches worked weekly on site with students in 2 GEAR UP high schools covering the content of 10 aggressive study guides in preparation for the scholarship competition.
Who Wants to Win a Scholarship?
Who Wants to Win a Scholarship? (WWWS?), was a uniquely productive combination of rigorous academics and cable television excitement that awarded scholarships and education-related prizes. Teams of Academic Coaches worked weekly with students on site in 14 GEAR UP high schools covering the content of 10 aggressive study guides in preparation for the scholarship competition.
