- Does the M.Ed. in School Counseling prepare me for certification?
Yes. The school counseling program is designed for students interested in becoming school counselors, and prepares students to qualify for the school counseling endorsement under the Illinois State Board of Education's School Service Personnel Certificate. Students must also hold a valid teaching certificate or complete three additional education courses. Applicants to the School Counseling Program who are interested in becoming school counselors in other states should study the certification requirements in those states to ensure that certification requirements are met during graduate study.
- Can I qualify for certification without earning the master's degree?
Persons interested in becoming school counselors in Illinois who already hold a master's degree in education or related field and a Standard Teaching Certificate may apply for the Type 73 - School Counseling Endorsement Program. This program does not lead to a graduate degree at Loyola University Chicago, but endorsement by the school that the student has met Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements for the school counselor endorsement.
- Does the M.Ed. in School Counseling prepare me for licensure?
Yes. The School Counseling Program is approved by the Department of Professional Regulation in the State of Illinois as a professional counselor preparation program. Graduates of the School Counseling Program are eligible to apply for licensure in Illinois as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC).
