FAQs: Type 75 - Principal Certification
For answers to more FAQs about the School of Education, see the general FAQs page.
- What are the requirements for the Type 75 principal certificate?
To be eligible for the Type 75, students must hold a State of Illinois standard teaching certificate, have two years of full-time teaching or school service personnel experience, and a master's degree. The State of Illinois requires 30 semester hours (9 courses and a practicum).
- If I already have a master's degree, will I need to get another in order to get a Type 75 certificate?
Not necessarily. A minimum of seven (7) courses, including the practicum (21 semester hours) which are required by the state, must be taken at Loyola. Whether or not you will need to take one, two or three of the remaining required courses is determined by a review of your master's degree transcripts. If your master's degree is in education, the chances are good that you will have taken one, two or even three of the remaining required courses in your master's program. The exact number of courses can only be determined by a transcript review conducted by the administration & supervision certification advisor.
- What educational careers require an Illinois Type 75 certificate?
Any school leadership position which involves the supervision and/or evaluation of teachers, such as department chair, dean, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and others, would require a Type 75 certificate. Students wishing to become superintendents, directors of special education, or school business officials will need an additional certificate endorsement.
- What happens after I am accepted into the program?
Transcripts are reviewed by the administration & supervision certification advisor to determine the number of courses needed to be taken at Loyola. This review is generally done in conference with the student. Following the transcript review, the student and the faculty advisor develop a program plan. The student then registers for courses to begin the semester following the conference.
- Where are courses offered?
Administration & supervision courses for the Type 75 principal certificate are offered at Loyola University Chicago's Water Tower Campus and at Loyola Academy in Wilmette.
- How long will it take to complete this program?
Most students in the Type 75 certification program are able to complete the requirements in four or five semesters (including summer enrollment).
